Design Process
Creating a successful design includes following a process to insure that the final product is unique, creative and follows given guidelines. This process can be applied to any form of design or creation. Artistic talent and creativity certainly help but usually a certain design process is also applied. Each designer or group of designer may have a different approach to the process of problem solving and that process will evolve over time. Some phases of the process will take more time than others or will be in a different order, however you will find that most designers will follow a process to come up with a design solution.
1 | Research Phase
Before jumping into a project it is always useful to start researching the project at hand and design is no exception. During this phase, the project will be broken down into different components, the clients wishes and requirements taken in consideration and the meaning or purpose of the project established.
2 | Competitive Analysis Phase
It is always a good idea to find out who does what in your competition. This analysis is crucial to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your competition. It is an important tool to find out what works and what does not work before having to test it with the new design.
3 | Exploration Phase
This phase explores different aspects of the project. Colors, words, adjectives and comments are usually jolted on a page to start defining the experience of the final product. Sometimes a mood board is created, textures gathered and images clipped.
4 | Sketching Phase
This phase will produce a serie of exploration sketches illustrating different directions and options for the design. Then some sketches will be taken to the next level and further developed. During this phase, the basic skeletons of options are investigated and developed.
5 | Typography & Imagery Phase
This phase encompasses the exploration of different type faces and images to convey the right message through the project. Images are not always necessary since typography can certainly be used as graphic elements.
6 | Composition Phase
This phase marries the rough sketches with the typographic and imagery selections to form improved versions of the initial sketch selection. Further development and detail resolution take place during this phase.
7 | Execution & Implementation Phase
This final phase brings the chosen direction to full completion. Some changes are still possible but minor. Some mediums are more flexible than others and the amount of change may be different depending on the final product. For example a css-based website design will offer more flexibility for change than an object being sent to production.
